cancer reseach
The discovery of cancer stem cells by Dr. John Dick in 1994 initiated a new direction in cancer research. The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret continues to build understanding and global proficiency in this promising area.
This year, two international projects, each co-led by a senior scientist from The Princess Margaret and a senior scientist from California universities, were funded by the Cancer Stem Cell Consortium in partnership with the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The mandate of the Consortium is to coordinate an international strategy for cancer stem cell research and to rapidly translate discoveries into new treatment and therapies.
One project is led by Dr. John Dick of The Princess Margaret and Dr. Dennis Carson of the University of California, San Diego. Their research will focus on the development of new drugs to treat leukemia, a disease where half of the adults diagnosed will die of the disease.
The other project is led by Dr. Tak Mak of The Princess Margaret and Dr. Dennis Slamon of the University of California, Los Angeles, and it will focus on developing new drugs for solid tumour cancers.
Thanks to your support of The Princess Margaret lotteries, our world-leading scientists are collaborating with other leaders to unravel the complexity of this disease that affects 1 in 3 Canadians.
